Culture and rights
Puck & Glory is a free, independent cartoon hockey game. Its 42 teams come from Canada and Europe, and many carry a city's history, food and landmarks, or a people's culture. This page says how we handle that, what is still open, who we hope will help, and how to tell us when we get something wrong.
How the game handles culture
- When a choice could go either way, we choose the more respectful one.
- The first release has no budget for commissioned art. Where a culture's own art, language or music would belong, the game shows something plainly neutral and imitates nothing.
- Each team plays in its own city, and its arena is there too.
- The two Indigenous teams, the First Nations Thunderbirds and the Sápmi Reindeer, each have a review of their own. Until people from those communities take part, anything that reaches too far is withdrawn or made neutral.
- Trademarks and controlled names become plain words: "the 1896 Games", not the Olympic name. Real places keep their real names, but the game never copies their logos, protected images or lighting.
- Food is named for what the stall serves: a dish usually made with meat or animal fat is called by its vegetarian version.
- A concern holds up a release only when it is clearly a matter of respect or of law. Those are tracked under the labels "inclusiveness" and "legal". Everything else is reviewed after launch, team by team.
Open concerns
We know about these, and each one has a ticket. The first six are settled before the first release; the rest wait for the people whose culture they touch.
- Four arenas stood in another city than their team.
- Stockholm's three-crowns crest.
- Berlin's team and its walking figure.
- Valletta's eight-pointed cross.
- Charlottetown's storybook house.
- Whitehorse's Gold Rush name and pickaxe.
- The First Nations Thunderbirds.
- The Sápmi Reindeer.
- Placeholders in six arenas.
- Art that comes near famous works.
